Santana declines WBC invitation from Venezuela

According to New York Area Media Reports, Johan Santana plans on declining an invitation to pitch for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic at the request of the New York Mets.

They want their ace to be careful with his recovery from knee surgery.

"I'll do what they ask me to do," Santana said Monday after a conditioning workout at the Mets' spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., according to the New York Post. "I just want to get ready for the season."

Santana took a major step towards that goal by throwing 16 pitches today from the mound, according to Newsday

Johan should be ready to pitch by Opening Day. Kudos to the Mets Front Office because they cannot afford to go without him at all this season with the lack of another ace in the rotation. I'm also sure David Wright is happy that he won't have to face Johan at all when/if Team USA ever play Venezuela in the WBC.
