Mets sign Livan Hernandez to a Minor League Deal

The New York Daily News reported today that the Mets have signed SP - Livan Hernandez to a one year minor league contract worth $1 million dollars. The deal will also include $1 million in performance bonuses for the 2009 season. Hernandez is expected to report to camp this weekend.

Omar has had his eye on Livan for the past few years now and finally signs him. The guy can flat out eat innings up but who knows how much he has left in the tank. Last year he complied a 13-11 record with a 6.05 ERA between stints with the Twins and Rockies.

Livan will compete for the #5 spot in the rotation with Tim Redding, Freddy Garcia, Jonathan Niese. Omar has stock piled on starters the past couple of years and it has worked out to the team's advantage because of injuries. My hunch is telling me Freddy Garcia will lock down the #5 spot with Niese getting sent back to the Minors. Tim Redding would be a solid long-man in the bullpen with Livan in the Minors awaiting his turn in the rotation. Time will tell though...

  1. I believe that this is a solid signing for the Metropolitans. We've seen first hand the last few years how having no pitching depth in the minor leagues and how having a fragile starting rotation has come back to bite the Mets where the sun doesn't shine. Livan has proven to be an innings eater and I truly believe that there will come a point this season in which he will be called upon to make some starts for an injured Met starting pitcher.
