It wasn't the Miracle on Ice. It wasn't a World Series victory. However, David Wright's walk off base hit against Puerto Rico tonight instantly became the biggest moment of the World Baseball Classic's brief history. In a win or go home situation, USA found itself down 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th, but was able to string together a couple of hits to get the inning started. This was capped off with a dramatic at bat for Wright.
Wright took a 2 and 1 pitch and laced an opposite field base hit that fell just inside the right field line. Roberts scored the tying run followed by Jimmy Rollins to win the ball game and send Team Puerto Rico packing.
It was truly great to see Wright come up in a clutch situation and deliver. As Mets fans, we're hoping there is more of this to come. More importantly, half of Team Puerto Rico can now return to Port St. Lucie and dawn the Mets uniforms again. Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Alex Cora, Nelson Figueroa, and Pedro Feliciano can get back to business and Mets games will no longer look like replacement player scrimmages.
Beltran and Delgado performed in like stars in the WBC as they look to carry this positive momentum into the regular season. Beltran flashed leather tonight robbing Brian McCann of a 390foot hr. Delgado sent a pitch deep to straight away center that landed in the batters' eye.
